In an era where action role-playing games increasingly emphasize accessibility and convenience, Path of Exile 1 offers an alternative for those who crave something different. Ruthless mode, introduced in 2022 as an experimental league and later incorporated as a permanent alternative to the core game, strips away layers of loot and power to create an experience reminiscent of the genre’s earliest days. It is Path of Exile 1 distilled to its most unforgiving essence: scarce currency, limited movement skills, and a progression curve measured in weeks rather than hours. For a subset of the community, Ruthless is not a novelty but the definitive way to experience Wraeclast.
The fundamental premise of Ruthless is scarcity. In the core game, currency items drop in abundance, and players can expect to find multiple chaos orbs before completing the campaign. In Ruthless, currency drops are reduced by over ninety percent. A player might finish all ten acts having found only a handful of transmutation orbs and a single alchemy orb. This scarcity fundamentally changes the relationship between player and loot. Every orb becomes precious. Every item that drops must be evaluated for its potential. The crafting bench, a staple of core progression, is entirely absent in Ruthless, eliminating deterministic crafting and forcing players to rely entirely on what they find or trade.
The reduction in loot extends beyond currency to skill gems and support gems. In the core game, players can purchase most skill gems from vendors and have access to a wide array of support gems by the end of the campaign. In Ruthless, skill gems must be found as drops, and support gems are exceptionally rare. A character reaching maps may have only a single support gem for their primary skill, and that gem might not be the optimal choice. This forces players to build around what they find rather than following a predetermined plan. A league starter build guide written for core mode is nearly useless in Ruthless, as the gems and gear it assumes simply do not exist.
Movement skills are another area where Ruthless imposes severe restrictions. In the core game, skills like Dash, Flame Dash, and Shield Charge provide near-instant mobility that bypasses terrain and trivializes many dangers. Ruthless removes these skills entirely, leaving players with only the base walking speed and limited mobility options like Leap Slam, which requires a weapon type and has significant animation time. This change restores weight to positioning and zone traversal. The Labyrinth’s traps become genuine threats. Kiting dangerous monsters requires planning. The world of Wraeclast feels larger and more dangerous when it cannot be bypassed with a single button press.
The experience of playing Ruthless is defined by incremental progression. A character in core mode might reach maps in six to eight hours of focused play. In Ruthless, the same journey can take forty hours or more. Every piece of gear with a useful resist feels like a major upgrade. Finding a support gem for a primary skill is a moment of celebration. Completing the campaign is an achievement in itself, and progressing into red-tier maps is a mark of true dedication. The slower pace encourages players to engage with systems they might otherwise ignore. Crafting with the few available currency items becomes a careful strategic decision. Vendor recipes, often overlooked in core play, become essential for generating resources.
The Ruthless community, while smaller than the core player base, is passionate and dedicated. Private leagues and guilds form around the shared experience, with players trading scarce resources and celebrating each other’s milestones. Streamers have popularized the mode, treating it as a purist challenge that showcases game knowledge and mechanical skill. The mode has also fostered a competitive scene, with players racing to be the first to defeat endgame bosses in each Ruthless league.
Ruthless mode is not for everyone. The scarcity and slow progression can feel punishing to players accustomed to the generous loot of the core game. Build diversity is constrained, as only the most resource-efficient skills and passive trees can succeed with limited support gems and gear. Yet for players who find the core game too fast, too easy, or too cluttered with loot, Ruthless offers an alternative that recaptures a feeling many thought lost to modern gaming. It is Pathof Exile 3.28 Currency at its most elemental: a struggle against overwhelming odds, where every drop matters, every decision counts, and survival is never guaranteed.
