I came into Reign of the Warlock thinking I could gear it like any other melee-ish build, then Echoing Strike smacked that idea right out of my hands. The skill looks simple, but the weapon behind it decides whether you cruise through Hell Terror Zones or stall out on chunky elites. If you're still hunting pieces or you just don't wanna wait on luck, it's pretty tempting to buy diablo 2 resurrected items so you can actually test setups instead of theorycrafting in town.
Echoing Strike doesn't play by normal rulesYou'll notice it fast: attack speed isn't the lever here, Faster Cast Rate is. Get to 75% FCR and the skill starts feeling "right" instead of clunky. Push to 125% and it turns into that nonstop rhythm where you're always throwing, always pulling damage back through targets. The odd part is how the projections copy your weapon's base stuff, so the usual "small" stats become big deals. Deadly Strike, +skills, even simple accuracy helpers end up mattering more than you'd expect once five blades are doing the work.
Budget start that actually farmsFor a first real ladder setup, Insight in a Great Poleaxe is hard to hate. The 35% FCR is the whole point; it lets you hit breakpoints without praying for perfect rings and amulets. Meditation also keeps your runs from turning into potion-chugging breaks every other pack. It's not flashy, but it's steady, and that's what you want while you're building the rest of your kit. I like it for rune grinding and general leveling because it keeps the build online even with scrappy gear.
Mid to high-end picks that change the feelArioc's Needle is where Echoing Strike starts feeling unfair. A good +skills roll boosts everything that matters, and once Mirrored Blades synergies stack in, your damage jumps in a way you can feel immediately. Ignore Target Defense helps the whole setup stop whiffing, and the Deadly Strike makes the "return pass" hit like a truck, especially when you aim long so the projections boomerang through a boss. If you want a cheaper punch, an ethereal Hellslayer is a fun one: huge top-end damage, and the Fireball proc helps clear tight packs without you repositioning every second. For tougher encounters, I've also liked Fortitude paired with a heavy base like a Thunder Maul when survivability starts to matter as much as speed.
How I'd choose a weapon without overthinking it
I'd go in order: first hit 75% FCR, then look for +skills and Deadly Strike, then worry about everything else. Echoing Strike rewards consistency more than "perfect on paper" gear, and you'll learn a lot just by swapping one weapon and running the same zone again. If you're missing a key piece and don't feel like burning another week on drops, a lot of players simply use U4GM to grab items or currency and get back to testing in real fights instead of staring at an empty stash.
